Since 1989, there has been a strong link between the research
output and conservation and development action, most notably
in the cases of the Northern Sierra Madre Natural
Park Conservation Project (NSMNP-CP)
and the Community-Based Forest Regeneration and
Research Project (COMFREP).
The
Junior Expert Program is funded by DGIS
and will be executed in close cooperation with the relevant
institutions in Region 02. The research focuses on forest
management, indigenous people, and grassland rehabilitation;
three crucial elements for the conservation of the NSMNP.
In June 2004, the mid-term research seminar was held in
the Netherlands.
In
the coming years CVPED will continue to support conservation
and development projects in the Sierra Madre, particularly
through the Junior Expert Programme.
Two
PhD. researchers are conducting research directly relevant
for the problems in the park. The research findings will
be used by management of the park to improve protected area
management.
Both
Junior Experts will contribute to the demand-driven research
programmes of CVPED:
(1)
Farmers perception and adaptation
of agroforestry. >>
(2)
Indigenous people and tropical
rainforest management in the Northern Sierra Madre Natural
Park. >>
