Background

Cagayan Valley Programme on Environment and Development (CVPED)
is a joint research and education programme of the Isabela State University (ISU), the Philippines , and Leiden University (UL), the Netherlands .

Officially established in June 5, 1989, CVPED emerged out of a need to identify and investigate the underlying causes of environmental problems in the Cagayan Valley region.

In the past 17 years, CVPED has become the leading interdisciplinary research and education center on the environmental problems of the Cagayan Valley .

CVPED currently holds office at the Environmental Information Center (EIC), Isabela State University (ISU) Garita Campus in Cabagan, Isabela , Philippines .

EDUCATION

CVPED has a small core staff and maintains some basic facilities to facilitate educational activities. Students conduct fieldwork within the CVPED framework. The North-South Working Group proves to be an effective initiative to encourage Dutch and Filipino students to work in a problem-oriented, intercultural and interdisciplinary research team.

CVPED also supports Isabela State University (ISU) undergraduate students in the conduct of their thesis work. Strengthening the educational capacity of Isabela State University (ISU) continues to be a high priority of the program.

RESEARCH

The research of the joint program is structured around two interrelated themes: (a) co-management of natural resources , and (b) dynamics of land use change . CVPED provides assistance and administrative and logistical support to various research projects.
