About
CVPED
The
Cagayan Valley Program on Environment and Development (CVPED) is the academic partnership of the College
of Forestry and Environmental Management (CFEM) of Isabela State University (ISU) in the Philippines
and the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) of Leiden University in the Netherlands.
Officially established in 5 June 1989, CVPED emerged out of
a felt need to identify and investigate the underlying causes
of environmental problems in the Cagayan Valley region.
CVPED currently holds office at the Environmental Information
Center (EIC) of the ISU Campus in Cabagan, Isabela.
The program has the following objectives:
(1) To contribute to the growth of environmental science
as an interdisciplinary field of research and education. (2) To strengthen the research, education and extension capacities
of both Universities. (3) To contribute to the institutional development of ISU. (4) To stimulate the implementation of projects on sustainable development
of the Cagayan River basin and adjacent areas within administrative
Region 02.
Sixteen years of cooperation in the field of environmental science
have strengthened research capacities and provided the necessary
scientific input for the sustainable management of natural resources
in Northeast Luzon.
Research
and Education
In
the past sixteen years, CVPED has become the
leading interdisciplinary research and education center on the
environmental problems of the Cagayan Valley. CVPED has contributed
to a better scientific understanding of the environmental changes
in Northeast Luzon.
Three different types of research activities are currently taking
place within the program:
(1) CVPED student
research, (2) PhD research, and (3) Special research projects.
The
integration of research and education (and capacity-building
in general) is an important characteristic of the joint program.
CVPED aims to integrate research in the educational
curriculum of the two Universities. The core of the program
is formed by the research activities of Dutch and Filipino students.
The program encourages students to work in interdisciplinary
and international teams; an experience that enhances their field
work skills and problem-solving capabilities
RNIP PROJECT
The Regional Network for Indigenous Peoples in Southeast Asia (RNIP) was established to safeguard, restore and protect natural livelihood resources for the sake of poverty alleviation for indigenous peoples (IP) in the South East Asia region.
